Thales wins Kaohsiung Light Rail Transit Signalling contract in Taiwan

January 24, 2017 - Thales has been awarded a second, four and a half year, contract by China Steel Corporation for the Danhai LRT project in Danhai, North of Taipei. The contract is the follow-up of the design and manufacturing of signalling, communications and Operational Control Centre (OOC) systems contract, signed in April 2015. This time Thales will be implementing a signalling system for the extension of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Kaohsiung is the second largest city after Taipei, with almost 2.8 million inhabitants. In 2012 Kaohsiung was not only the first city to launch a tramway project but also the first to deploy a modern electric tramway system. The extension of the current line will add another 23 stations to the already 14 existing ones, adding up to a 22 kilometre circular line with interchanges at both ends of the two existing metro lines.

As part of the new contract, Thales will handle the Automatic Vehicle Localisation System (AVLS) as well as signalling, through the supply of interlocking systems, and Traffic Light Priority systems.

The new contract is further proof of a strong partnership between Thales and local industrial giant China Steel Corporation (CSC) and shows the confidence in Thales’ solutions. The Groups positions as the leading developer of signalling solutions for Taiwan’s LRT, is fortified by the new contract and key to future tramway projects in Taiwan and across Asia.

Numerous metro projects in Hong Kong, Thailand, Japan, Malaysia and Mainland China have already been delivered by Thales, the leader in cutting-edge urban transportation technology.
