Gotthard press event in Vienna: European Corridors

May 20, 2016 - Thales took the opportunity to invite some journalists and present the advanced ETCS signalling solution we are implementing in the Gotthard Tunnel.

Journalists from India, Poland and France also had the chance to visit the ÖBB central station in Vienna and its Operational Control Centre.

Once the Gotthard Base Tunnel is put into operations, on the first June 2016 (one year in advance), it will stretch over 57 km and connect the Swiss-Italian and Swiss-German regions.

This new link under the Alps will shrink journey times between Zurich and Milan to less than three hours, bringing these countries closer.

Due to Thales advanced signalling solutions such as ETCS level 2, this tunnel will allow for the circulation of more than 300 trains per day at speeds of up to 250kmh in two separate tubes.

The Gotthard tunnel will strengthen the shift of transalpine transit traffic from road to rail and will significantly reduce CO2 emissions in favor of a more sustainable transport.

This is the world’s longest railway tunnel followed by the Lötschberg tunnel.
